After a few long hours we finally arrived at our destination- Forty 1° North in Newport, Rhode Island. This waterfront boutique hotel is named after its latitudinal location.
Upscale and modern, with sweeping views of Newport Harbor and walking distance to shopping and dining, it's right off popular Thames street.
Our suite was spacious and chic, filled with natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and a gentle seaside breeze. After a long afternoon of cliff walking and discovering Newport, we were able to wind down on the balcony to admire a beautiful sunset.

We love the seamless flow of the main public area leading from the low-key reception desk to the open plan Oval Bar and Lounge with its sweeping views of the marina and harbor. Tip: A wine-tasting class paired with a five-course tasting menu is held every Wednesday night.
The hotel’s culinary centerpiece is The Grill, just behind the bar, which in turn leads down a few steps to an outdoor teak deck, the bar pavilion and marina, lined on each side by multimillion-dollar private yachts. Note: Slips from 45 to 250 feet are available with full yacht services from dockside dining to onboard cleaning.
At the rear of the main lounge is an intimate library with a fire, billiards table, board games and wide-screen TV—ideal for a quiet, relaxed evening. On the level below, a sleek private event space opens to the pavilion and marina.
The 24 guest rooms and suites in the main hotel are on the two upper floors with harbor or city views. The best digs are the two waterfront Grand Suites (Nos. 3 and 16), which have separate living and dining areas, balconies, and can connect to king double rooms.
We also recommend the Harbor View Suites (Nos. 1, 2, 14 and 15), which also have balconies and seating areas. All the rooms have gas fireplaces, two-person soaking tubs, Frette bed linens, iPads and iPods, Malin+Goetz bath products, and a bar that can be customized to guest preferences.
There are four other accommodations in separate neighboring buildings. Two Cottages provide private and intimate retreats. We love the two-level Red Cottage with its romantic rustic décor and loft-style bedroom.
Two Lofts are above Christie’s—the hotel’s other restaurant—and can sleep up to five people, making them ideal for families or a group of friends. Note: The Lofts are not as contemporary as the rooms in the main hotel.
Forty 1° North is rapidly becoming one of Newport’s social and culinary hot spots. Grilled meats, seafood, a raw bar and locally sourced produce headline the seasonal menus in The Grill and dockside on the marina, while an Asian-inspired tapas menu keeps things fun and lively at Christie’s."
